MELISSA AUF DER MAUR is my dream woman.
& much like a dream, she eluded my for quite some time. Although she is no wallflower, I had somehow missed her in the lineup of musicians I had gone through and deliberated over. Her name was mentioned here & there. Her music haunted me, coming and going at various times at which I would scramble for a lyric or a hint of familiarity to use later that night when I could hunt her music down and devour all her solo efforts. It was my beloved who finally sat me down & served her 2010 solo release Out Of Our Minds to me. It is not the Valhallan like drums & battle cries that get me. Nor the intricately crafted lyrics. Not even the guest appearance by none other than Mr. Danzig himself. Its all of the above and more.
The opening track The Hunt sets the tone perfectly, its haunting, charged and mysterious, leaving you wondering whats coming next in the title track. Out of Our Minds is one of the best songs on the album, as is Meet Me On The Darkside. The lower points come in the form of un unnecessarily slow intro's into some song which jar the flow slightly. But don't let this deter you, they soon build into sultry, mystical goodness. Much like the lady herself. GO VIKING WOMEN!
